Week Thirty-Four: “Harry, Build a Bunker”

Harry saw the blessed virgin
in a window stain
on a highrise
in Dallas 1993
Harry prayed that night
like he never ever prayed before
asking of the Lord
what should I do, what should I be?

And the Lord said
“Harry, build a bunker
It’s the end of the world
You ain’t no boy scout
but now it’s time to be prepared
Harry, build a bunker
Fill it up with gold and guns
and fill your heart with courage
You’re my last man, now don’t get scared

Lock the doors and hide the dogs
it’s December ’99 and the computers
are about to send us all to Revelation
It’s a bug called Y2K
It’ll end the world and make us gay
or cannibals or something like
some old communist nation

Harry wrung his hands
and wondered if time had run out
Had he wasted these six years
on a girl named Mary Sue
Mary Sue was pretty
but she didn’t go to church
and so once again he asked the Lord
Oh Lord, what should I do

And the Lord said
“Harry, build a bunker
It’s the end of the world
You ain’t no boy scout
but now it’s time to be prepared
Harry, build a bunker
Fill it up with gold and guns
and fill your heart with courage
You’re my last man, now don’t get scared

Millenniums come, millenniums go
There’s a black man in the White House
and Mary Sue has taken both kids
and left the state
Harry looks at his back yard
It’s yellow and it’s bare
Then he asks his own reflection
what’s left to do with all this hate

And the Lord said
“Harry, build a bunker
It’s the end of the world
You ain’t no boy scout
but now it’s time to be prepared
Harry, build a bunker
Fill it up with gold and guns
and fill your heart with courage
You’re my last man, now don’t get scared
