Week Thirty-Nine: “Flat Lands”

Ruby passes the corner gas each morning
and wonders how much heart it would take to knock it over
She could borrow her brother’s ski mask
and his nickel-plated four-leaf clover
and blow in and out without a warning

And get away from these flat lands
these flat lands
these flat lands, where the day wastes you

Ruby tunes up with LaKeisha before their shift begins
and Ruby says, Hey Keisha, let me marry you
Keisha acts like she’s joking, so Ruby asks like it too
and her heart breaks a little once again

In these flat lands
these flat lands
these flat lands, where the day wastes you

What I wouldn’t give, what I wouldn’t steal
to conquer the West with my love at the wheel
Where the wind will blow my hair into tangles
and every step will be at a new angle

But these flat lands
but these flat lands

Ruby takes the long way home each night
where a man she does not love waits at the door
If he makes one more remark she’s gonna put him on the floor
and finally let herself take flight

From these flat lands
these flat lands
these flat lands, where the day wastes you

From these flat lands
these flat lands
these flat lands, where the day wastes you
